Kings Canyon

Day 21 started with a walk over a few sand dunes (not hard to find) to take photos of another magnificent dawn.

We hit the road and 130 km later we arrived at Kings Creek Station—our location for a couple of nights.

After setting up camp, washing, lunch and other mundane stuff the four of us took off in our car for   Kings Canyon and the easy one hour walk.  This was to be one of the features of the trip so far.  Words and photos do not do it justice, but the following images may help.
The third photo shows the result of the recent bush fires.  It is enough to break your heart—as if life is not hard enough out here.

The other side of the road had plenty of green plants and undergrowth.

The start of our fourth week of the trip was highlighted by a 3.5 hour 6 km ridge top walk of Kings Canyon.  It started at 9:15 am at the bottom and began with rocky steps to an elevation of 100 metres before we got to the top.  Again words and photos do not do justice to the magnificent views, many of them reminding us of the Bungle Bungles range two years ago.
The following photos may help convey an image.

After the walk we rested and had refreshing showers.  Afternoon tea was date scones.

Today was the first day that I had shorts on all day.  The temperature peaked in the mid 20’s (Celsius).

Happy hour was very relaxing around the camp fire—until we ran out of wood.

Tuesday 11 June saw us depart the realm of Kings Canyon.  It had been a most rewarding couple of days.  It was very surprising to see the very young (babe in arms) and the very aged (don’t go there) tackle the long walk of yesterday.  True to form we found an excellent free camp north of Erldunda.  However a lack of wood meant that a fire did not happen.

Day 24 was a casual drive into Alice Springs, a chance to wash the car, a chance to access the internet and a chance to slow down (until tomorrow).

Stay tuned for more on the Northern Territory, particularly Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges.
